ICSI High School Internship Program

ICSI High School Internship ProgramIn June 2022, the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley, CA, launched a  new high school internship program spearheaded by Primal Wijesekera. The program is designed to excite, inspire, and educate students about the field of computer science.

ICSI Director Dr. Lea Shanley in "Expanding Ocean Understanding" Panel at CHOW

Dr. Lea Shanley, Director and President of ICSI, spoke in a panel discussion titled "Expanding Ocean Understanding" on June 8, 2022 at the Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW). "Most of the community-based citizen science projects are focused on the terrestrial, and the marine domain is lagging behind,” said Dr. Shanley during the discussion. The panel focused on how "Indigenous knowledge and wisdom, community science and technology can expand our understanding of the ocean in the face of climate change." According to the NOAA National Marine Sanctuary, "roughly 80 percent of the ocean is unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored. Only an estimated 10–25 percent of marine species have been described globally."

Professor Wolfgang Wahlster Receives Honorary Degree from University of Oldenburg

Wolfgang Wahlster, recipient of honorary doctorate from University of OldenburgProfessor Wolfgang Wahlster, ICSI board member who was CEO of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) for over 20 years and is currently its chief executive advisor, was honored with his fifth honorary doctorate by the University of Oldenburg in Germany on March 14, 2022.

ICSI Researchers Receive Emilio Aced Research and Personal Data Protection Award

Paper: 50 Ways to Leak Your DataA team of researchers from the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), UC Berkeley, IMDEA, AppCensus, and University of Calgary received the Emilio Aced Research and Personal Data Protection Award from the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) for their 2019 paper "50 Ways to Leak Your Data: An Exploration of Apps' Circumvention of the Android Permissions System". That paper also received the distinguished paper award at Usenix Security 2019.

New ICSI Vice President, Head of Networking and Security Research

Michael Mahoney, ICSI Vice PresidentAt the end of 2021, Prof. Vern Paxon made the big move to take early retirement from the UC Berkeley faculty and stepped down as ICSI Vice President and Director of the Networking Research Group in order to devote his full time to Corelight, the startup he, Dr. Robin Sommers, and colleagues spun out of ICSI several years ago. Prof. Mark Allman has been selected as the new director of ICSI's Networking Research group. Prof. Michael Mahoney is ICSI's new Vice President.
