One of the most exciting parts of our work at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) is how we empower other organizations to lead the way in opening science and research to the broader world. Specifically, over the past year, our team at ICSI has been honored to serve as the host organization and fiscal partner for a startup non-profit organization called The International Interactive Computing Collaboration or, more creatively, 2i2c.

Iowa State University will lead development of the new testbed with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, a consortium of industry partners, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

ICSI researchers, led by Dr. Michael Luby, will be participating in the PAWR Program known as ARA: Wireless Living Lab for Smart and Connected Rural Communities.

Artificial intelligence is providing new opportunities in a range of fields, from business to industrial design to entertainment. But how about civil engineering and city planning? How might machine- and deep-learning help us create safer, more sustainable, and resilient built environments?

A team of researchers from the NSF NHERI SimCenter, a computational modeling and simulation center for the natural hazards engineering community based at the University of California, Berkeley, with researchers from UC Berkeley, the International Computer Science Institute, Stanford, and UCLA, have developed a suite of tools called BRAILS -- Building Recognition using AI at Large-Scale -- that can automatically identify characteristics of buildings in a city and even detect the risks that a city's structures would face in an earthquake, hurricane, or tsunami.
